Resumen: This article proposes a dynamic localized competition model in which the key determinants of competition vary over time. When configuring their activities, firms must simultaneously respond to the expectations held by their institutional context and to the technical demands of their activities. Accordingly, we focus on institutional and technical dimensions as determinants of the competitive map. Our research is conducted in the Spanish Banking sector in the period 1991-2009, immediately after an unprecedented deregulation process. Our findings demonstrate that competitive patterns change after an external shock. Furthermore, we conclude that in dynamic environments competitive patterns may not be appropriately analyzed taking a static perspective.
